Pagbabago! People’s Movement for Change called on President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to step down in light of her candidacy and Malacanang’s admission that charter change is still on the tracks.

“Mrs. Arroyo should resign. She should stop her ill-disguised scheme to perpetuate her clique in power,” said Pagbabago! Spokesperson Fr. Joe Dizon.

Pagbabago! warned Mrs. Arroyo that her schemes to stay in power only pushes the people to intensify protests calling for her ouster.

“Mrs. Gloria Arroyo is desperate to win a Congressional seat, and to push charter change because these are the only means for her to retain immunity from suit,” Fr. Dizon added.
The Pagbabago! leader said that revival of proposals for a charter change is something expected from the crumbling administration.

“Mrs. Arroyo is fearful of the people’s retribution. She knows very well that charges for her crimes against the people await her once she steps down from Presidency in 2010. With a Congressional bid and a shot for the post of prime minister after a change in the Constitution, she could evade accountability,” said Fr. Dizon.

Pagbabago! warned this early that the President’s plans to run for Congress and to push charter change are already indications that massive cheating will take place in the coming Presidential elections.

“She will use all machineries and resources at her disposal for her objectives. She will use government funds for campaigning, and she will tap her ‘Garcis’ in Comelec to ensure her and her political allies electoral victory,” said Fr. Dizon.

The Change Movement slams the President’s bid for Congress and the Prime Minister post “as another shameless display of her unmitigated greed and lust for power.”

“She has managed to stay in power for nine years by cheating the elections, and by wielding a reign of terror; in those years, she was able to steal from the nation's coffers, and she has maintained a state of impunity which led to thousands of human rights violations including the recent massacre of 57 civilians in Maguindanao,” said Fr. Dizon.

Students, faculty, doctors and employees led by Pagbabago! will march tomorrow, December 4 in protest of President Arroyo’s candidacy and charter change. The activity tagged as ‘Walk for Change’ will be held in Taft Avenue in Manila. Adamson University, St. Scholastica’s College, Philippine Christian University are some of the schools that will participate in the protest. #
